"Enlightened?" [1st John Series] (1John 1:5-9)

You claim to be enlightened, eh? Well let’s just look at that:
Enlightenment is noble but you’d best not be a rat,
For if you are, you’re in a mess, for God’s not so inclined,
For He’s the one who lights you up, at least so in your mind.

We can’t see light as such, just what is lightened up by it;
When light hits things and bounces back we get a glimpse, a bit;
It is not perfect, eyes have range, though bigger than our pix;
Still, better than the darkness, and more light will quickly fix –

Our vision when we can’t make out exactly what is seen;
“Approximate” is good enough, discerning what things mean;
But God is light; no darkness there; nor dimness to His view –
He sees in light reflected all the things we say and do.

First test of our “enlightenment” John holds up to our claim,
Is “righteousness”, “just action done in love” – that’s not the same
As being perfect – far from that – more, letting Christ address
Our messing up our perfect lives – the sins which we confess.

So if you’re so enlightened, how’s your walk with other folks?
For fellowship is not just God and you – the stick in spokes
Is children God has also got – the body-life He made
In making Adam as His child – our unity displayed.

Sure, we’re all different, but it’s “one” that’s our reality;
Like different body-parts we have, which add up to be “me”;
So how’s your walk with Sam or Jane – obnoxious ones you know?
(A great test of “enlightenment” here on this earth below).

There’s lots of ways Christ’s blood “at-one’s” our life with God’s once more –
Like “covering”, or “paying off”, “propitiating”, for
We differ in the aspect which is ruptured by our sin,
But God in Christ “atoned” for us, that we might re-begin.

Thanks Lord for this.
