"Begotten Not Made" [1st John series] (1st John 3:4-10; Mark 4:14; James 1:16)

A sower went out to sow um-hum;
And when his work was done um-hum,
The devil snatched the seeds away –
No crop was there for harvest day.

Begotten-ing is marvelous!
In love, that is, for men – that’s us,
For seeds it’s two parts – one’s delayed –
There’s mix, then later, DNA –

Gets scattered to the wind and wave;
At harvest time the farmers save
It for next year, to use, or plant
In agriculture’s yearly dance.

So too with Word of God in man –
It meets (or not) good soil, so can
Mature in us, and help us grow
To God-like be – this much we know.

But mystery surrounds it all –
What happens when such seed-word falls
Into our hearts and minds on days
When trouble comes, and evil plays?

Results from some seed, sown before –
When hearts, hard-packed from hurt – so door
Into our inter-life was closed,
New seed-life’s stopped – and so it goes.

Well, here is how it works, my friends –
God’s Word, like Moses’ words attends
Our hearts, for it is “laid upon”
Our hearts, ’till peace and health are gone –

Then broken hearts let seed-word in,
Like frost-heaved pavement in the spring;
Yes, brokenness is hard to bear,
But seed gains access through despair.

For we, like Christ, begotten are –
Our second-birth will take us far;
Brought forward by successive crops
Of seed-word to maturing’s top.

Thanks Lord for this.
