"Old Jonah" [Module #155] (Luke 11:29-32)

When Jonah preached in Nineveh, the town all turned around;
Who was this man? A grouchy type, reluctant too, I found;
At first he went the other way when told to go and preach,
Eventually he turned around some Easterners to reach.

He’s just like us in many ways – God gives us work to do –
We’d rather not, or else we can’t once road to work we choose;
Then we give space to let God help us do what He has asked,
Then life becomes the way we preach which folks can hear at last.

Like Jesus, so like us as well, God will perform His word
In us if we will let Him in – fulfill what we have heard;
Like Jonah, Jesus, so with us – we do not give a sign,
But rather are the words we preach which folks can hear just fine.

So if folks want a sign from you, just laugh and walk away;
If they can’t read the word in you, the way you work and play,
Then maybe what is needed is some time with God in prayer,
So how you live is word you preach – far more than just hot air.

Lord, as I start this day today, I ask you for your grace;
May words I say, and things I do, let You be in this place;
I know not what this day may bring of pleasure or surprise,
You do – so let me rest in that way precious to Your eyes.

Thanks Lord for this.
