The Winsome Dream

"To dream the winsome dream", as sung,
Sounds great until the work's begun,
Then, caught up in reality,
"Impossible" we quickly see.

The question comes quite clear to us –
"Impossible" it is to us
To do the task God had in mind
When He our life-time work assigned.

We see quite clearly, now at least,
But seeing's where that pathway ceased –
Where mean and mean now fall away,
We're left with "us" to live each day.

For one, we cannot cope with folks
Who different are – prefer the blokes
Who are like us – less friction then,
Who's way of life we comprehend.

Then there's that problem of the gas
To fuel and power up that task;
It's just not there – "Oh woe is me,
I cannot drive the road I see".

So level one articulates
Our hearts desires – a listing makes
Which shifts to level two when we
Do unto others what we see.

Except we can't – no job or funds
Available – for anyone –
So question is, "What can we do
To move ahead, not play the fool?"

To date, we've groped an unclear way;
Now that's cleared up what can we say
To those who taunt us, "Give it up –
It's mean, and mean, in life that's rough.

That's where Apostle Paul arrived
As he a crisis-time survived,
Then said aloud, "Oh woe is me,
I cannot do the task I see".

And then it hit him – grace abounds
For those in Christ – we move around
As God fulfills in us the law
(That Golden rule-ish list we saw).

Take hold, let go, each have a part;
We later smooth like J-stroke art,
But now, at least, we have a clue
How to proceed as task we do.

The question in our mind remains,
"Where is the power? Please make it plain,
Is there a center to this place
Apart from me, and human race?"

For power to move on in life,
Out of this ditch, away from strife,
Is it in me and what's around?
Is all just real-istic bound?

If it's in me, or world around,
Then asking God for help is found
To be quite stupid, that I see,
For getting on its up to me.

If center of the universe
Is God, then life apart gets worse,
Like now – for way to go is clear;
The winsome dream – so far, so near.

In twelve-step program – six and seven –
The shift that's made from hell to heaven
A choice – who pulls us from the ditch?
A major focus-change – the switch.

We can't avoid that choice in life:
It's mean and mean and piles of strife,
Or life triumphant in the mean
And mean around – now's clearly seen.
