Self Talk (Romans 8:1-4)

The wish of the Spirit – it guides my way:
Turn left or right, approach and say,
"I love you", "You're crazy", "I think you're swell",
"You'd better desist – that's the road to hell."

The wish of the flesh, more familiar it is:
"Cut corners",Coerce him", "Do unjust biz,
"Adulterate marriage", "Pollute the shore",
"Take care of yourself – you matter more".

But many have shifted (the opt-in way),
From heeding the flesh to the Spirit's say;
When we blow assignments, or lose our way,
It's then in our minds we hear self-talk say –

"You fool", "Wake up", "Don't so stupid be",
"You'll never grow up to maturity";
"God just doesn't love you", "You're an idiot"
Such self-condemnation makes our spirit slip.

Then we read Ephesians in chapter two,
How we are now raised, now hang out with you;
From there our assignments fulfill some task,
By grace and your Spirit do as you ask.

So now we agree with Paul's precious word,
Through which, in his letter, God's word is heard;
There’s no condemnation; self-talk has changed;
In Christ, by the Spirit, life's rearranged.

For now like the hand which upholds the key,
The Law of the Spirit of Life we see;
Freed up from temptation to walk God's way,
We now run our business triumphantly!
