The Shift To Global Space

Their ‘part-time’ work means ‘full’ in fact,
And each must be content with that,
So we can have our products cheap –
It gives the young some crumbs to eat.

For ‘young’ means ‘student’ here in town –
At ACC, BU are found
A flow of students through our place
Three years – until they graduate.

But what's the score behind the scenes?
Whatever do these paychecks mean?
"No benefits", right off the top,
Because part-time is all they've got.

But more than that, they ‘pick up shifts’,
No overtime, so hit and miss
Are times when folks can have a life;
"We're flexible, and flex for strife –

"And flex around emergencies,
And one or two realities;
Beyond that we can't do much more,
That's not what low-end jobs are for."

So two weeks out they know their sched;
And two-weeks’ pay means they are fed,
And housed, with bits of pocket cash;
"Forgo your life," is what they're asked.

What's there when students graduate?
Or if they don't participate
In higher Ed – what's there for them?
What adult life for women – men?

Two incomes make the former one,
So twice the time from family's gone;
A few elite make out quite well;
In fifty years for most, just hell.

For low-and jobs don't pensions make;
If savings start, they're low and late;
So life from our community,
Is gone for goods and service cheap.

In fifty years they'll kill the old
And sick, when they're too great a load,
Just like they kill off half the kids –
Abort – thus nuisance, gender rids.

We shipped the other jobs elsewhere,
Now buy cheap goods as we compare;
Our tariffs took us where we've been,
Free trade means best has now been seen.

Though tariffs meant we could get wealth,
And solve the problems with our health,
It drove the wars for colonies,
For conquest over land and seas.

As China wakes up from its sleep,
And Africa the dawn now greets,
The Third World nations come alive,
Protected turf's now grown in size.

The union now has larger walls –
The stratosphere defines its halls;
The time has come to shift our sights
To global scene – there make things right.

For in our nations problems were;
There union songs reform bestirred;
The problem? ‘Differential speeds
With which to work to meet our needs’.

In municipal space were seen
Some fast, some slow; some pokey, keen;
And councils sought to mediate –
To speed the slow; help fast to wait.

Now countries face the self-same task
In global world, like in the past;
For some move fast and others slow,
Now global is our space to grow.
