End Of A Mothers Role
“When Redvers ended was the time
I saw an end to role of mine
In adult life – of raising sons –
He's on his own – he's victory won.“I chose the way of staying home
So kids would never feel alone,
At least in fragile early days
When quiet harbour always pays.“I did my best – not perfect it;
I helped them find their lifetime fit,
But in the end it was their call –
They each faced life, walked strong and tall.“Ironic that, as life for me
Was hardly tall inside – you see
A painful start to life was mine –
Not for my kids – of strengthened mind.“Resolved I was they'd grow up strong,
Face challenges when life went wrong,
Then rise above each circumstance
Sing through the end of life's romance:“For poetry; and candlelight;
Fresh coffee perked – my heart's delight;
A paddle up the Moonbeam's trail
Those rippled sounds when under sail;“The lights that twinkle from the rocks;
The smell of campfire; evening talks;
Refreshing swims in waters clear –
These parts of life have brought me here.“That day I saw, such carried you –
It gave you strength, sustained you too;
You triumphed o'er adversity,
And that brought peace at last to me.“My heart reached out as best it could;
Your path I barely understood;
But somehow you got up again,
And laughed at people's needless pain.“I wish you well, my son, press on;
Too soon my mind and life are gone;
Make good the parts you've taken up;
Raise high at end the Victor's cup.“I'm leaving now, it is the end;
This part I do not comprehend,
But like your dad, I trust there's more,
As now I pass through heaven's door.”Oh mother, I recall that day
As I to Redvers drove away –
You stood, head cocked, hands clasped above
And shook them – waved supporting love.So too, I now return your wave,
As you depart that it might save
You fearing what you're going to –
Here's hope, and strength, prayed out for you.Thanks.
