King For A Day

You can be King and have your way,
But watch, it lasts just for a day,
Then you are gone – it’s natures way –
So polish up your resume.

Positions have the clout to do
The work at hand (some options too),
But in the end’s where we all see,
It’s done within community.

The clues are clear with eyes to see
And ears to hear – plain as can be;
You come and go, we sit and laugh;
You think you’re King – you’re not – you're staff.

We hired you in, then wrung you out;
You did your part, quite well, no doubt;
But that’s now done, we need fresh blood,
A bit like God with Noah’s flood.

It’s parting time – first subtle clues
If you don’t heed, you still will lose;
The shift shows forth with marker-words,
As fence goes up the truth is heard –

For on the outside of the fence
You’ll find yourself – there’s no defense;
There’s grieving time to ease the split;
It’s time to act – not time to sit.

From here on in, the scene’s not nice;
Folks seldom hear the sage advice
From kinder folks, shared from within –
“Take my advice – job-search begin.”

Till then it’s more a guessing game –
Who’ll come for us?” “Who will remain?”
“Where will s/he go?” “What will s/he do?”
In all that's said there's ample clues.

You’ve got a year – two at the max;
Once that’s upfront, folks can relax;
King David prepped for Solomon –
Foundations laid, stepped down for son.

We stand on work that’s done before
We do our part then out the door
No need to do that part again
If we stay 'round, it comes off lame.

Consolidate, and have a blast;
Go out with flair, no – it won’t last,
But it’s a part – low bricks in wall
Essential are, so it won’t fall.

The body-life, Christ’s edifice,
Is built of stones, and looks quite nice;
He only asks we ply our art,
Then let the next one do their part.
