Because

Because there’s lots of us these days,
There’s things we do which wouldn’t pay,
If only tiny bands roamed ’round,
And small demand today was found.

We’re pushing seven billion now,
Which makes me wonder sometimes how
We’ll feed us all – for we don’t feed
All now with basic food we need.

My uncle – economics type –
Who worked the bank to get things right
For Canada, throughout his days
Said always he was quite amazed –

At how the world of commerce ran;
Not just with quip of “unseen hand”,
But at a level more profound –
How life for all flowed ’round and ’round.

“For it has always been for me,
An awe-inspiring mystery,
How life rolls on, both bad and good,
In ways which are not understood.

“Of course we play our part in it,
But still, there’s parts which do not fit
Our theories – more we fit them to
Reality with crazy glue.

“That is the part of life for me,
Which raises sense of mystery;
The idiom in which I speak
Of life and death which we all seek.”

For me, as population grows,
Quite small for us but heaven knows,
It’s huge for others on the globe,
This mystery I’d like to know –

How does a concept, thought, or act,
Get spread around – both false and fact –
Not just through school (that’s quality),
But anyhow – as we all see.

Freud talked about subconscious ways,
And others tweaked his thought since days
Of early studies of the mind,
In rats, and monkeys, and mankind.

Right-brain and left – the metaphor
So popular today – and more,
We find that builds on deep insight
As comprehension gropes to right.

One simple thing tops that for me,
“Though we don’t inner workings see,
We know without nutritious food,
Kids don’t develop as they should –

So there – across the table sit
Brains immature because of it;
Cannot we see what feeds their brains,
Is best for us – we’re all the same –

At least in what we need to live,
Grow up, mature, so we can give
Our best to life – designed to be
A part of our humanity

We need each other in this world,
On which six billion people swirl;
Ideas spread, that’s plain to see,
But action lags it seems to me.
