Poultry

[ Intro to outlook for poultry production from original discussion papersource#1, "Outlook for Manitoba's Livestock Industry" section p. 1-2 ]

Chicken and turkey production is concentrated in the southeast corner of Manitoba, close to the poultry processing plants. Table egg production is also concentrated in the southeast but is more spread-out across the province.

Most expansion is expected to involve family-run operations. The Manitoba Chicken Producer Board has increased the quota of all small operations to help them remain commercially viable. Two large producers may consolidate their quota onto two locations in the next five years, which would increase the number of broiler farms over 400 animal units in Manitoba from two to four farms. Expansion in the broiler industry has been divided among the smaller farms and is not expected to create farms with more than 400 animal units.

One large egg farm with 500,000 hens has been constructed and is run as a family operation. Individuals who have consolidated their quota have constructed two other large laying hen farms with 150,000 birds each. Another large commercial egg farm is expected to be built in the next five years because of quota consolidation. Two large leghorn breeder farms may also be constructed. The number of hen operations in the province with over 400 animal units in one location will increase from seven to ten farms. It is expected that 70 per cent of the farms in the province will continue to be very small, with less than 20,000 hens or 200 animal units.

None of the turkey farms or broiler breeder farms is over 400 animal units. One broiler breeder farm may grow to nearly 400 animal units within the next five years.
