[ Intro to vibrancy of teh rural economy (subset- trend to larger operations only aspect raised) from original discussion papersource#1, "Common Concerns" section p. 7 ]Changing production systems have been accompanied by changes in the size and ownership patterns of farms. Manitoba is undergoing a strong trend toward much larger operations, sometimes owned by several partners who have combined their resources to achieve economies of scale. Many livestock operations are also becoming more vertically linked to other participants in the industry.
Some Manitobans worry that the traditional family farm will be unable to compete with these large, integrated businesses. They also see the difficulties of developing regulatory approaches that are fair and practical for all of the various sizes and types of livestock operations.
