Groundwater Withdrawls as An Environmental Concern

Material From Original Gov't Discussion Paper

[ Intro to groundwater witherawls concern from original discussion papersource#1, "Common Concerns" section p.2 ]

Some people have expressed concern about the rate of groundwater withdrawal required to supply intensive livestock production operations. The concern is that the aquifer may be depleted or that the withdrawals could affect neighbours’ wells.

Manitoba’s Water Rights Act requires a licence for developments that withdraw more than 25,000 liters of groundwater per day. Most intensive livestock production operations use more than this amount for watering stock, washing facilities, cooling, dust control and manure transport.
