[ Intro to impact of hogs on crops from original discussion papersource#1, "Outlookfor Manitoaba's Livestock industry" section p. 3 ]

Expansion of the livestock sector could be the most significant influence on the crop sector in decades. For example, production of 10 million hogs would require about 1.5 million additional tonnes of feed grain (mainly barley), or the average yield from 1.1 million acres. The total area currently devoted to barley production is about 1.5 million acres. Expansion in beef and poultry would also require additional feed grains. This would considerably reduce the grain sector's dependence on export markets, and improve profitability because of reduced transportation costs.
