[Summary of Minnesota Hog Related Policy from original discussion papersource#1, Regulatory approaches throughout North America p. 2 ]
- Livestock producers with more than 10 Animal Units must complete feedlot permit applications whenever new feedlots are established, old feedlots are expanded or modified, ownership has changed or the operation has been determined to be a pollution hazard.
- All Minnesota feedlot permits require a manure management plan that accounts for all manure produced by the operation. These plans are not required to be submitted to any government agency but the producer must test the manure for nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium at the time of agitation/application. Soil sampling to determine the nutrient content is mandatory.
- Producers who build manure storage structures that provide at least 120 days of storage may be eligible for personal property tax exemptions. Manure storages must have access from two locations for pumping and agitation equipment, and concrete under-barn storages must be continuously ventilated.
