The Professions

The reason Professions are located around universities is that part of the definition of a professional is that the person has undergone an extended period of training usually of an intellectual nature in order to perform a service which is of a unique and changing nature, primarily exercising his or her own discretion within some sort of accepted boundaries of ethical conduct, usually enforced by some sort of governing body within society.

There seem to be two main concerns, quality of service and protection of society, while at the same time, setting "professionals" free to operate without undue restriction.

Of course there are other uses of the term "professional", such as those in sports competition who wish to restrict participants to those who are not "professional" so as to keep the competition amongst equals, and give ordinary folks a chance. This is often defined as someone who earns a certain percentage or figure of income.

There are also those who want to be defined as professionals for some social status reason, just like the tendency of some employers to glorify job titles to preclude having to increase pay. However, the need for there to be some extended training precludes the involvement of these folks in the legal definition, so they do not usually continue at universities beyond bachelor level, which is what is generally understood by the definition.
